Socialist Party USA Condemns the US Sanctions on the International Criminal Court
The Socialist Party USA condemns the US sanctions on the International Criminal Court. US sanctions are a hegemonic assault on international rule of law and were forged solely as an attempt to create impunity for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and the war criminals who commit them.
The ICC is a body created to prevent genocide and ensure that countries and their leaders are held accountable for war crimes. The Trump regime's sanctioning of the ICC is a blow against human rights and further puts the US on the wrong side of history. This is just an escalation of the US campaign against human rights. As the US chose not to join the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice due to the likelihood that US leaders would be charged, tried, and convicted of war crimes, punishing the ICC with sanctions goes further than just a lack of support for justice, dignity, human rights, and the international rule of law.
These sanctions are a direct result of punitive efforts to punish the international community for attempting to hold Israeli officials responsible for their actions. This assault opens the door for a future where policies may be used against the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and possibly against the United Nations itself. These actions are a threat to the basic concept of international law, and thus a long-term threat to the rights of humanity.
The Socialist Party USA calls upon all people of conscience to stand with justice and human rights, end the sanctions, and call for all governments to sign on to the International Criminal Court. All governments around the world and their leaders should be subject to accountability and answerable to the international rule of law.
