Northern NJ Socialists Organize Support for Migrant Workers and Immigrants in their Community

The Northern NJ Local has been organizing in Essex and Passaic counties in support of migrant workers and immigrants.

The organizing and actions have increase during the summer and fall months. In September, local member Greg Pason, with support of other Local members, set up a concert and teach-in Montclair with Resistencia NJ. The event included a teach in with a speaker from Resistencia and live music. It served as an organizing meeting and fundraiser for residents detained and deported.

The event helped kick off ICE Out of Montclair and expand the ad hoc Ice Out of NJ campaign.

Clifton and Paterson Organizing

Local member Jeff H. has been working with community members to set up a rapid response network in the Paterson/Clifton area. He has also joined organizations including Brick City Socialists to set up regular food and informational distros. The network of activists have been working closely with Cosecha NJ, a statewide

immigrant rights organization.

Jeff has also joined community members to demand that the Clifton council bring forward a resolution supporting the state "Immigrant Trust Act". His work at the October 21st council meeting helped get that resolution on the agenda.

Montclair Organizing

Montclair members have helped kick off a ICE Out of Montclair an ad hoc network of residents and and have focused on rapid response and mobilizing residents to demand that the Township of Montclair adopt a resolution supporting the statewide Immigrant Trust Act.

Northern NJ Local member Park C. and Greg P. helped organized community members to push for the resolution in late September and early October Twp council meetings. After some pushback from the council, the community came out at the October 20th Council meeting and succeeded to get the resolution on the agenda.

Follow up

The Local will continue to work with a broad coalition of community members, community organizations and immigrant rights organizations to build existing and new "ICE Out" networks and help build an opposition to a stronger movement to oppose the growing racist and xenophobic initiatives of the government.
