Volunteer Positions Available

                                                   The Socialist Party currently has the following volunteer positions open. Any SPUSA member in

                                                   good standing is eligible and encouraged to apply.

Position Title: Executive Editor of The Socialist

Description: The Executive Editor is both the visionary of The Socialist and holds the ultimate responsibility for the content published to The Socialist. The Executive Editor's role is generally (but not limited to) the following responsibilities:

  • Establish overall vision of The Socialist

  • Maintain regular communication with the National Action Committee and National Committee

  • Attend bi-weekly National Action Committee meetings and fulfill responsibilities of a voting NAC member

  • Actively solicit content for The Socialist website and magazine

  • Establish editorial and operational processes with input from all Editorial Board members

  • Continually monitor staffing needs and internal processes and suggest changes as needed

  • Regularly attend and lead Editorial Board meetings

  • Ensure Party statements are copy-edited and published in a timely fashion

  • Promote The Socialist online and in-person

  • Manage social media channels for The Socialist

  • Serve as a technical backup to the web master

  • Serve as a backup Art Director

Position Title: Managing Editor of The Socialist

Description: The Managing Editor works intimately with the Executive Editor and handles the mechanical, behind the scenes aspects of The Socialist. These tasks include (but are not limited to):

  • Tracking submissions, copyedits, and publication of submissions

  • Distribute approved submissions to the Editorial Board make calls for copyeditors

  • Copyediting and curating content

  • Working with contributors and editors on a regular basis

  • Convening monthly meetings on Zoom

  • Participating in editorial planning of the magazine

Position Title: Art Director of The Socialist

Description: The Art Director is responsible for establishing the overall branding of The Socialist.

  • Design and implement The Socialist website

  • Design four issues of the magazine per year

  • Provide logo and graphic design for the website, social media channels, and print materials, as needed

  • Serve as a technical backup to the website manager

Position Title: Website Manager of The Socialist

Description: The Website Manager (aka webmaster) is responsible for:

  • Post all new content to the website in a timely fashion

  • Implement SEO tactics, including titles, descriptions, and keywords on all posted content

  • Oversee Google Analytics and provide monthly reports

  • Perform website technical updates as needed

Position Title: Editorial Board Member

Description: Editorial Board Members do not necessarily have an area of expertise, but are generalists that can help contribute, curate, and copy edit content so we have regular postings to The Socialist. Editorial Board Members are expected to:

  • Attend at least nine monthly meetings per year. During the monthly meetings, the Editorial Board reviews published and in-progress webzine content; discusses new content ideas; plan for the magazine (four issues per calendar year); and have an open discussion about other The Socialist-related matters

  • Promote The Socialist as much as possible and act as a representative of it to both Party members and the general public

  • Stay on top of current events and topics that can be turned into engaging content that promotes the Party's platform and principles, provides analysis from a socialist perspective and/or inspires thought and dialogue

  • Copyedit content

  • Curate content that relates to the party's platform (not just in one specific area, like an AE)

Position Title: Local Organizer
Description: The Local Organizer is the designated Socialist Party organizer for a specific at-large area. The purpose of the Local Organizer Program is to give members in at-large areas the tools and support to organize a local party. Responsibilities include communicating with members in the designated area, organizing Socialist Party meetings/events, and submitting monthly reports/updates to the National Office on organizing progress. The Local Organizer's contact information is listed alongside state and local party contact information on the national website.
